From this position, we are standing on Otto's Lane looking northward. Cemetery Hill is visible in the distance on the left; to the right, beyond Cemetery Hill, Piper's Hill can be glimpsed.
The crest of the steep slope in the left foreground offered Confederates an excellent view of all Union approaches across the Otto Farm and up the Lower Bridge Road. As it was, there were no Confederate troops to protect this slope, so Welsh's brigade advanced across this scene relatively unmolested.
