The unusual nature of this image is revealed in the detail version: "...each women is holding a piece of hardtack...the woman on the left has taken two bites from hers. The man in uniform is bending over in the process of stirring the contents of a can in the other woman's hand with what appears to be either a bayonet or a long knife." Frassanito, p 88.
