This modern view is directed to the north, with the east face of the Dunker Church on the left. The fields in the distance were originally completely occupied by the West Woods, and were until recently a cornfield. The original woods were removed at some point around the turn of the century. A reforestation program was begun in March of 1995 to replant about 35 acres, consisting primarily of oak, maple, and sycamore.
The region shown here traded hands during the morning phase of the battle at least six times, as three waves of Union troops gained footholds in, and were then repulsed from, the southern end of the West Woods. As the sun set on the end of the day on September 17th, the Union line ran north to south in an position advanced from the East Woods, but did not include the West Woods or the Dunker Church. Here, the Confederate line held.
