This view depicts the general approach of the first Union assault, that of the 11th Connecticut. From here, one can appreciate the manner in which the Confederate high ground dominates the field. The assault - which was badly handled - was easily driven back.
It is interesting, or rather tragic, to note that colonel Kingsbury of the 11th Connecticut was mortally wounded in the assault; his death was a great shock to his Confederate opponent commending the other side of the creek, D.R. Jones, who happened to be Kingsbury's brother in law. Jones never recovered, resigned his commission due to bad health in October, and died of heart aliments in January of 1863.
