This scene shows the stone wall which runs along the crest overlooking Otto's fields. On the extreme right would be the northern edge of the 40 Acre Cornfield, but, like Otto's plowed field, it is currently fallow. The land occupied by this cornfield is extremely rugged, and today it is hard to image a cornfield having ever been there.
This is roughly the position occupied by Benning's Brigade until relieved by Gregg's Brigade. Because of the failure of Harland's Brigade to advance properly, this position remained in Confederate control. Nearly all the ground visible here, however, was occupied by the Federals. It is roughly here that Gregg's Brigaded entered the cornfield. Since Fairchild's, Welsh's, and Christ's Brigades were located on the other side of the hill in the background, one can get an appreciation for how the Confederates could slip around the Federal left wing almost undetected.
